Building Wells

In 2014 Canhelp raised enough money to build 37 wells in a poor part of Rural Cambodia. Here are a series of photos showing a well being constructed.

In 2012,  Canhelp raised funds to build 28 wells in a poor parts of rural Cambodia. With their one off $240 donations, our Canhelp community helped build wells that changed the lives of several families forever.

Wells are so important in Cambodia for lots of reasons. Cambodia receives abundant rainfall during the wet season (May to October) and almost no rain for the remainder. In rural areas with no safe wells, drinking water is taken from open ponds or rivers which may be polluted. Villagers, usually children, often develop diarrhea and other serious infectious diseases. Unfortunately during the Pol Pot years, most wells were destroyed.

Families in rural Cambodia use water from wells for drinking, bathing, washing, as well as for animals and to irrigate crops. If families have access to a well, they can grow “6-week” vegetables all year round, such as peas, beans, lettuce, tomatoes, etc.

The next ‘Well Drive’ will be conducted in late  2013. For more information contact us at admin@canhelp.org.au.
