Teacher Sponsorship

Change one teachers life, and all of their pupils benefit.

A crucial issue in Nepal is the development of it’s teachers. In public schools, most teachers are untrained and unqualified. Canhelp aims to improve the quality of eduction through developing the skills of teachers in the classroom.

For a one-time donation of $175, you can help a Nepalese teacher pay their fees to enrol in a Professional Development Course run by EWC.

Prabha Pradhan, Chair of the Socio-Economic Welfare Centre for Energetic Women (EWC) early in her career graduated as a trained teacher in Nepal. Education of females has always been her passion and over the past two years this has culminated in courses being held in her offices for the professional development of practising teachers.

Because the government system talks about training for teachers but nothing seems to reach the coal face, each of Prabha’s courses has had a considerably larger number of applicants than the 25 places on offer, so selection is quite competitive and interviews are held. Interviews and the classes themselves are in English. Local school Principals report that the courses have a very positive impact on the standard of teaching by graduates.

Each course lasts for 13 weeks with 2 sessions per week, each of 4 hours, held mostly outside school hours. Relevant school Principals are very encouraging of their staff and give the attendees special leave consideration.

The attendees are funded by a combination of their schools, by Australian support from Canhelp and, as Prabha insists, also from the private pockets of each attending teacher. The latter amount is small, but it has the effect of encouraging the teacher to feel personally involved. Once teachers begin a course, attendance has been close to 100% and feedback (available from EWC files) has been outstanding.

Lecturers are from EWC in-house and invited professional experts from Nepali schools and universities. Dr Colin Woodley, Patron, has conducted the first 4 sessions of each course personally because Prabha times them to coincide with his 6-monthly visits to Nepal. Other Australian teachers have also made significant visiting teacher contributions.
