Our NGO Partner in Nepal
The Socio-Economic Centre for Energetic Women (EWC) is the local organisation in Kathmandu through which Canhelp executes aid projects and sponsorships.
Chairperson Prabha Pradhan, her executive assistant Aratee Shrestha and her staff of 10 have been invaluable.
EWC operates under a board of seven Nepali women highly respected in the community.
No words of praise for EWC could be overstated. In Nepal it is unfortunately a common occurrence to find overseas aid money frittered away significantly before it reaches the intended recipients due to graft and corruption.
By using the EWC for operations at a local level, Canhelp can ensure this does not occur.
Prabha Pradhan has been called the ‘Mother Theresa’ of Nepal. Prabha works for Canhelp programs and projects without remuneration.
Prabha Pradhan is a social worker by profession working for the benefit of women and her personal interest has always been in the field of education, especially for underprivileged children. This is the main reason behind her support for educational and female empowerment programs.
For the last 12 years EWC has been working with a mission to create an environment for women in Nepal to be self sufficient by socially empowering them and assisting them in becoming economically independent.
Prabha is also associated with MicroBanker Nepal, a banking software company developed by the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO) and German Development Co-operation (GTZ) and the Comfort Co-operative Limited.
EWC, a non-profit, self-sustaining and non-governmental organisation (NGO), was established in 19th May 1998, to provide help, resources, support, motivate and encourage to socially and economically depriving members as required, so that they can respect themselves.
Since from the established date, the Centre has 1600 members and has been conducting various programs to train women, help develop skills and create greater awareness about numerous issues such as social, economic and health related topics. At the same time, the organisation helps to groom the talent and skill that some of these women already possess.
“It is a well known fact that our country Nepal is a beautiful country but falls among the poorest countries of the world due to various reasons. For centuries, Nepali society has been engrossed in a feudalistic modality and is male dominated. Most Nepali women are forced to tolerate social and economical injustice. The main reason behind this is lack of education and empowerment among women. Similarly, the participation in Canhelp’s sponsorship program is one of our efforts to encourage education for a girl child.
So, the organisation “Socio-Economic Welfare Center for Energetic Women” simply known as Energetic Women Center (EWC) was established on 5th Jestha 2055 B. S. (1998, May 19th) with a mission to create an environment for women to be self sufficient, be empowered and independent so that they can respect themselves and learn the respect of others.
We are trying to provide help, resources, encouragement and support to socially and economically deprived members as required. We are trying to uplift social and economical condition of women through skill development, income generating, saving and credit program along with the income generating activities. We do try to accomplish this by providing training and skills, utilising their talents and conducting awareness programs.”
